Even though Kevin Harvick won at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday, he is not yet officially in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs for 2022.

Kevin Harvick of Stewart-Haas Racing won the NASCAR Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday. It was the first time in almost two years that he had won a race.

Harvick won Sunday's 200-lap FireKeepers Casino 400 on the four-turn, 2.0-mile (3.219-kilometer) oval track in Brooklyn, Michigan. He is the 15th different driver to win at some point in the first 23 races of the 2022 season.

Since there are still three races left in the regular season, there could still be up to 18 different winners before the playoffs.

No matter how many winners there are, there are only 16 spots in the playoffs. This means that one or two winners could miss out on the postseason, despite the common misconception that all you have to do is win to get in.

In this case, the regular season champion and the winners of more than one race are automatically in the playoffs. However, the point standings decide which single-race winners get in and which don't.

As one of the nine drivers who have won a single race, Harvick isn't officially in the playoffs yet.

There are still 180 points to be won over the last three races of the season, with 60 points up for grabs in each race (10 for winning stage one, 10 for winning stage two, and 40 for winning the race).

Harvick is currently 133 points ahead of Kurt Busch of 23XI Racing, who is currently the lowest placed single-race winner, and 87 points ahead of Team Penske rookie Austin Cindric, who is currently the second lowest.

Of course, this number shows two things: first, that Harvick hasn't mathematically won, and second, that there's not much reason to think he won't be in the playoffs.

Even though he has only won one race, he is ninth in the point standings, which puts him ahead of five of the other eight single-race winners.

So, it's not a sure thing, but Harvick is well on his way to making the playoffs for the 13th time in a row. Despite all the talk about him during the first 22 races of the season, 2022 won't be his first season without a playoff spot since 2009.
